Sr. Student Support Counselor

Position Summary:

The certified school counselor provides leadership in the school through the implementation of a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program aligned with the district and school's mission to promote academic, social/emotional, and college/career development, while ensuring equity and access for all students.

STRATEGIC PLANNING

  1. Designs and implements a data-driven, comprehensive school counseling program for all students to address barriers to student learning and to close the achievement/opportunity gap.
  2. Delivers programs that promote students' development of essential mindsets and behavior standards including, but not limited to, learning skills, social skills, self-management skills, and college/career readiness skills.
  3. Reviews and disaggregates student achievement, attendance, and behavior data to identify and implement interventions with current knowledge of promotion, retention, and graduation requirements.
  4. Provides professional leadership to establish a culture conducive to learning.
  5. Counsels individual and/or small groups of students with academic, career and personal/social concerns.
  6. Assists students in developing a plan for achieving educational, career and personal/social goals.
  7. Consults with a variety of school-based teams to facilitate appropriate placement decisions to enhance student achievement, which includes but is not limited to exceptional student staffing's, 504 determination meetings, and Child Study team meetings.
  8. Confers with classroom teachers, administration, support staff, community agencies and parents regarding students and their needs.
  9. Provides support to teachers in the delivery of counseling program related curriculum.
  10. Uses school data to identify and assist individual students who do not perform at grade level and do not have opportunities and resources to be successful in school.
  11. Creates yearly, data-driven goals that advance student outcomes in areas of academic, social/emotional, and college/career development.
  12. Follows the guidelines of the national, state and district standards for professional school counselors.
  13. Uses the skills of leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to create systemic change to improve the academic, social/emotional, and post-graduate success of all students.

SCHOOL CLIMATE AND THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

  • Use evidenced based management strategies.
  • Sponsors clubs and activities to promote social engagement and leadership.
  • Collaborate with other professionals and parents after recognizing student distress or abuse and take appropriate action based on school procedures and law.
  • Align counseling procedures that focus on the whole child by considering social, emotional, character and mindset initiatives.
  • Assists in ensuring a safe, nurturing, and effective learning environment for staff and students.
  • Assists with conducting information sessions and providing information about Collegiate High Schools to potential parents and students.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND PROCESS MANAGEMENT

  • Participates in effective school-based professional development to improve academic performance results.
  • Assists with the development of school goals and monitors data to ensure goal attainment.
  • Utilize a variety of technology to engage and meet the needs of students.
  • Uses systems that examine the school/classroom performance level and improvement trends in highest student achievement and safe learning environment.
  • School counseling accountability for results aligned to all school and college strategic directions.
  • Engage in a continuing quest for personal growth through in-service, classes, and study.
  • Model professional and ethical conduct when dealing with students, peers, parents, and the community.
  • Perform and fulfill all professional responsibilities.
  • Abides by the American School Counselor Association's Ethical Standards for School Counselors (updated 2016).

LEADERSHIP

  • Assists in the development of student improvement plans that are aligned to the Vision Mission and Values of Collegiate High Schools and St. Petersburg College.
  • Assists with the development of a Professional Development plan aligned to school and college strategic initiatives, goals, program evaluation and accreditation.
  • Effectively participates in the MTSS, EL Committees, communicates data, and collaborates with teachers to ensure students' needs and achievement goals are met.
  • Is knowledgeable about evidenced-based instructional strategies for high school students including dual enrollment. Supports Collegiate High Schools and SPC's goals and strategic initiatives.
  • Plan and prepare counseling activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences

INFORMATION AND ANALYSIS

  • Monitors and communicates assessment results data to stakeholders including formative, summative, and cycle assessments related to state testing.
  • Contributes to an information system that supports the accomplishment of Collegiate High Schools goals and student expectations. Helps school personnel use data to make decisions to individualize and improve instruction.
  • Uses comparison, trend, and benchmark data to assess the rate of school/ improvement.
  • Interpret data for diagnosis, instructional planning, and program evaluation.
  • Establish appropriate testing environment and test security.

CERTIFICATION

Required: Holds or be eligible for a Florida Department of Education certificate in school counseling as specified in Administrative Rule 6A.4.0181, which requires a master's degree or higher in guidance and counseling or counselor education

EDUCATION

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree

Applicants must be able to pass a Level 2 background check through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and a reference check prior to being hired.
