OptumLabs is looking for an intern to support the formulation and strengthening of scientific arguments about how to implement patient-centered, value-based care, particularly in the space of prevention of autoimmune and allergic disease. This position will include assisting the team in the development of well-positioned arguments grounded in scientific literature that are tailored to broader audiences including our business and clinical colleagues.

Primary Responsibilities:

UHG R&D is looking for a summer intern to embed with us, learn about our research and help us redesign healthcare. This intern will work closely with the Healthy Aging team and learn about health conditions (e.g., dementia) and about our R&D programs and pilots aimed at intercepting functional decline in older adults. This intern will propose and lead a project aimed at redesigning healthcare. This project can entail (but is not limited to) the following:

  • Developing artificial intelligence that can provision patients to the correct care resource and coordinate care across physical and virtual settings

  • Transforming a practice to improve quality, reduce costs, and better satisfy the needs of patients and families.

  • Address the design for health challenge by focusing on social, economic and genetic determinants of health

  • Redefine operations in a health system

  • Develop care or payment models that have incentive compatibility between payers, providers, and patients

  • Build mathematical, statistical, or econometric models to assess the efficacy of new treatment models

  • Build a health coaching framework for new care delivery models

  • In addition to leading the above project, the intern will participate in the following activities:

  • Design and support research initiatives within the R&D shop

  • Conduct data analysis in partnership with data scientists

  • Learn about healthcare payment structure in a hands-on environment

  • Work to support the research agenda of Healthy Aging

  • Work with the research team to make investment recommendations based on scientific evidence

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a PhD degree relevant to healthcare. Must be actively enrolled in an accredited college/university during the duration of the internship

  • Ability to work as a summer intern at the UHG location in Minnesota during the summer of 2021

  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization. F-1 visa holders with Optional Practical Training (OPT) who will require H-1B status, TNs, or current H-1B visa holders will not be considered. H1-B and green card sponsorship is not available for this position

  • You will be asked to perform this role in an office setting, however, may be required to work from home temporarily due to space limitations

  • Employees are required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or a similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener prior to entering the work site each day, in order to keep our work sites safe. Employees must comply with any state and local masking orders. In addition, when in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are expected to wear a mask in areas where physical distancing cannot be attained
