The Deputy Chief Science Officer will report directly to the Chief Science Officer and will serve in a key role to develop, execute, and manage initiatives that will advance, promote, and apply psychological science in accordance with the APA Strategic Plan. Goals of this position include primary oversight of communication to scientists, management of the directorate budget, and management of tasks that offer high priority responses and opportunities to current events. The DCSO will represent the CSO when unavailable.

Education and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree in psychological science or related field.
  • A minimum of 10 years in an administrative or leadership position within an academic or scientific organization.
  • Broad and deep knowledge of psychological science and its applications.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, including communication to psychological scientists.
  • Advanced user of MS Office, Internet search tools, and research databases, including PsycINFO.

Responsibilities:

  • Scientific input and review for APA press releases and Presidential and CEO statements, letters, and presentations; and review of science-related statements and requests from Divisions and outside organizations.
  • Scientific input, review, and editing of materials for APA Communications including the Monitor on Psychology and Six Things Psychologists Are Talking About.
  • Scientific input, management, and review of communication specifically to psychological scientists that highlight APA activities, accomplishments, and relevant opportunities.
  • Direct data collection and analysis efforts to evaluate new opportunities for communication to scientists, including ongoing assessments of scientists' needs, data on successful engagement, and development of new communication features that are beneficial to scientists (e.g., briefs/updates to help communications across psychological sub-fields)
  • Assist communication staff in working with universities, departments, and scholars to identify potential press items.
  • Assist communications staff to develop strategies, educational resources, and guidance to help scientists directly engage with the media and participate in other forms of dissemination (e.g., nonfiction book editors, social media strategies, etc).
  • Manage budget for the science directorate in collaboration with the Chief Science Officer
  • Manage staff to respond to high priority requests within the association that require scientific expertise
  • Other duties as assigned
