Job Description
The Buyer Planner is responsible for acquiring materials on time from approved suppliers at competitive costs as required to support the operations.  Schedules production builds based on material availability and production capacity as defined within the MRP system. Partners with others as needed, including, Production, Program Managers, Engineering, and the Warehouse, to mitigate issues.
  • Review and take action on MRP results by creating, releasing, and confirming purchase orders and assure the update of acknowledged lead time/delivery dates into the ERP system.
  • Partner with the Commodity Lead team to identify suppliers who are capable, accountable, and flexible with lead times.
  • Assure communications with the Category Leads on material delivery status to meet production schedules as well as any material issues found during the production build process.
  • Schedule production builds for assigned programs; update production schedules as needed; and ensure timely release of work orders.
  • Understand production capacity for assigned programs to ensure builds are scheduled efficiently and effectively. Conduct “can-builds” of material on hand and be able to advise customers of delivery dates based on incoming material.
  • Report scheduling status to New Product Introduction team, Program Managers and Materials Planning Manager; advise on impact to customer ship dates.
  • Support development and implementation of plans with cross functional partners to meet annual goals which include revenue targets, on time production starts/finishes and inventory goal achievement (inputs and outputs of material).
  • Customer program point of contact attending Program Management/Customer meetings to provide Buyer/Planner input.
  • Report on key metrics including on time starts, WIP status and on time finishes.
  • Participate in weekly Sales Inventory & Operations Planning (SIOP) meetings providing inputs on production and material status for current and future builds.
  • Ensure Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system integrity and accuracy by reviewing system data and updating/correcting to assure that products are built to the latest released revision and that all required changes have been integrated into production builds.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree (Business related degree preferred) or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of three years of buying experience in a small to medium size manufacturing company
  • Strong MRP, MPS, Inventory and Production Control experience
  • Experience with Just In Time (JIT) inventory, and how it relates to potential excess and obsolete parts
  • Understanding of total value vs. best unit cost, and how it relates to MOQ purchases
  • Familiarity with Kanban & visual management in a production environment
  • Experience holding suppliers accountable for due dates, pricing, etc.
  • Microsoft experience required, specifically in Excel (using pivot tables, V-lookups, etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Inter, intra-department and external interactions required
  • Ability to obtain a Government security clearance, if necessary
