JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVES

RESPONSIBLE TO ASSIST THE DIRECTOR OF CREDIT RISK REVIEW AND THE CREDIT RISK REVIEW MANAGER IN THE MANAGEMENT OF AN EFFECTIVE CREDIT RISK REVIEW DEPARTMENT WHICH WILL ASSIST SOUTHSTATE BANK, N.A. IN ACHIEVING ITS OBJECTIVES OF OPERATING A SOUND AND PROFITABLE FINANCIAL INSTITUTION BY INDEPENDENTLY EVALUATING THE CREDIT QUALITY AND CREDIT PROCESSES OF THE BANK. THE PRIMARY GOALS OF CREDIT RISK REVIEW ARE TO ACCURATELY EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LENDING PRACTICES AND CREDIT-RELATED SUPERVISION, IDENTIFYING UNNECESSARY CREDIT RISK IN INDIVIDUAL LOANS AND VARIOUS LENDING UNIT'S LOAN PORTFOLIOS, CONFIRMING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LOAN GRADING, AND EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATING FINDINGS TO MANAGEMENT AT THE SAME TIME PROVIDING A FORCE FOR POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE BANK.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists the Director of Credit Risk Review or Credit Risk Review Manager in the execution of the procedures and policies of the Credit Risk Review function with the objective of assuring compliance with loan policies and procedures, regulatory and audit requirements, and the minimization of credit losses.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the lending function, laws, regulations, economic climate, Bank and Loan Review policies and procedures. Acts as a source of information for Credit Risk Review staff and members of the lending and credit teams.
  • Supports Director of Credit Risk Review and Credit Risk Review Manager in the identification and implementation of strategy, scope of reviews, and the preparation of work plans to accomplish the unit's goals. Assists in the monitoring and management of the completion of the Credit Risk Review plan for the department as well as department and individual goal performance throughout the year.
  • Involved in the recruitment, screening, and interview process, and assists in the hiring, and onboarding and training process of Credit Risk Review staff.
  • Supervise Credit Risk Review officers and support staff. Reviews and approves worksheets and reports written by reviewers and provides feedback to improve the quality of reviews. Recognizes and utilizes talent. Coaches, trains and motivates subordinates and develops successors. Administers mid-term and annual assessments, merit raises and reviewer grade levels. Assists department leadership in conducting staff meetings on key issues.
  • May lead (Reviewer-in-Charge) Credit Process/Target Reviews of Commercial Portfolios, select risk elements or procedures within a portfolio, or elements across portfolios. A full Credit Process Review will generally include an assessment of Credit Quality, Strategy/Credit Acquisition Planning, Underwriting, Structure, Approval, Annual Servicing, Risk Rating, Problem Loan Management, and Credit File Integrity. When not serving as Reviewer-in=Charge, oversees the timely completion and overall success of Credit Process / Target Reviews assigned to direct reports or other Loan Review teammates as requested by the Director of Credit Risk Review or Credit Risk Review Manager.
  • Assists the Director of Credit Risk Review or Credit Risk Review Manager in data collection for regulatory or audit reviews and exams.
  • Recommends additional and/or corrective action(s) to strengthen individual credits and improve the quality of the cumulative loan portfolio.
  • Prepares, assists, or oversees the preparation of high quality written comprehensive reports that address the appropriate key issues and includes statistics that support assigned ratings and recommendations.
  • Leads, if RIC, or oversees direct reports in preparing for and leading Credit Risk Review exit meetings to inform appropriate management of the review findings and recommendations for improvement that may prevent future credit quality and systems deterioration.
  • As assigned, responsible for the oversight or preparation of periodic Risk Assessments to validate or revise the risk-based ranking of assigned Universe unit(s).
  • Ensure communication with loan officers, underwriters, portfolio managers, analysts, credit administrators and other management is transparent and communicated in a logical and positive manner, providing positive and helpful feedback based on findings.
  • Owning and managing follow-up items resulting from reviews and reporting the resolution of those items in review documentation.
  • Attend various loan committee meetings and other relevant bank management meetings as appropriate, including periodic touch base meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Assist in the examination of potential merger and acquisition candidates as part of the due diligence process.
  • Supports the Director of Credit Risk Review or Credit Risk Review Manager in all aspect of Credit Risk Review conversion and integration in acquisitions and mergers.
  • Embrace change, serve as a positive catalyst for change, and model those behaviors for subordinates. Foster an environment that encourages continuous improvement and assist the Director of the Credit Risk Review and the Credit Risk Review Manager with implementation of continuous improvement initiatives. Develop ideas to increase the continued advancement and effectiveness of the Credit Risk Review function.

TRAVEL

This position may require occasional travel to various regions of the bank for training, and meetings with loan officers, credit team members and management.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: College Degree, preferably a degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum seven years experience in the Credit Risk Review function, commercial lending, commercial loan underwriting, commercial loan portfolio management and/or loan portfolio review experience. Prior Leadership experience preferred.
  • Computer literacy. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • General banking experience desired.
