Job Description
SUMMARY: Reporting to the Retail Credit Review Group Manager, the Credit Review Officer (CRO) provides credit risk assurance for mortgage warehouse lending, residential lending and small business banking businesses; may also support review and examination of commercial loan portfolios (up to 50% of time). Credit Review conducts independent, objective and timely assessments of the condition of credit risk exposure and credit risk management practices through the identification, evaluation, measurement and reporting of the level and type of credit risk and the effectiveness of portfolio oversight. The position may be responsible for scoping, planning, conducting and documenting activities, drafting reports, and providing guidance and support to management and peers. CROs have responsibility for examination as well as ongoing monitoring activities for assigned portfolios. Must maintain a high level of communication during all activities and may plan and lead meetings with senior leaders. Prepare, socialize, deliver reports, and Risk Issues as well as monitoring and validating their progress. Expected to meet or exceed production standards (quantity and quality) and communicate effectively within Credit Review and across the organization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties and special projects may be assigned.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with ability to effectively communicate including providing effective challenge and delivering examination/monitoring findings and conclusions with peers, management, and senior leaders. Build and maintain relationships with senior leaders and stakeholders while maintaining independence.
  • Conducts and manages examination and ongoing portfolio monitoring including management interviews, monitoring emerging risk, and analyzing portfolio data.
  • Manages examination activities, including but not limited to: sample identification, pre-exam memos, coordinating meetings with line of business partners, managing timelines, performs review of reviewer's work, and report writing.
  • Analyzes and review credit files to determine the accuracy of assigned credit risk ratings. Identify, review and report on potential credit weaknesses in loans and/or portfolios. Review may include analysis of the borrower's financial statements or other information, evaluation of the source(s) of repayment and the potential for default, reviewing financial statement and/or collateral documentation, and determination of compliance with the bank's lending policies/procedures, laws and regulation and sound banking practices.
  • Consolidates examination findings, considers feedback and develops formal, clear and concise Risk Issues to remediate risks; effectively communicates findings and conclusions with management. Monitor and validate Risk Issues to ensure appropriate Management Action Plan execution, timely remediation and sustainability.
  • Provides ongoing monitoring for assigned portfolios. Independently recognize market, industry and portfolio trends, management strategies, trends, strengths, risks, etc. of portfolio. Evaluate and report on assigned portfolios periodically with line management.
  • Perform quality control reviews and ensure all documentation is comprehensive, complete, and fully supports findings and conclusions. Adheres to and champions Credit Review quality control standards.
  • Assists Credit Review leadership with training needs including, but not limited to: mentoring other CROs, driving product quality and consistency, and best practices. Makes recommendations to improve Credit Review processes.
  • May participate and/or lead assigned special projects as needed.
  • Adheres to and complies with applicable, federal and state laws, regulations and guidance, including those related to anti- money laundering (i.e., Bank Secrecy Act, US PATRIOT Act, etc.).

EDUCATION
  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree.
    Advanced Degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE
  • Experienced credit professional with a minimum of 10 years of consumer (residential lending) and/or small business credit experience, preferably with a background in consumer credit underwriting
  • Demonstrated understanding of consumer and commercial credit risk management, retail and commercial credit principles, financial analysis and strong analytical skills
  • Experience in a credit or loan review department and formal credit training preferred
  • Experience as a Bank examiner preferred
  • Graduate degree and/or professional certification, and supervisory experience preferred

  • National Bank Examiner (or similar regulatory title)
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
  • BAI Loan Review Certification
  • RMA Credit Risk Certification (CRC) designation
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
