Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Smart Robotics Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in our Engineering Process Design & Realization Department reporting to the principal investigator of the project, group lead and department manager. You will help expand the department's smart control system design and integration capabilities and independently lead and complete research and development (R&D) assignments to support Idaho National Laboratory's research programs, including Autonomous Robotics for Hazardous Environments, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, Bioenergy. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • A foundational education in the engineering principles related to kinematics, automation, network technology, Internet of Things (IoT), system integration, solid mechanics, and fluid dynamics and heat transfer to design, operate, and maintain machines whose parts and assemblies function in a safe, reliable, efficient, and predictable manner.
  • Skills of developing and performing advanced calculations to analyze and evaluate the material properties and mechanical function of prototype apparatus and systems, as well as developing and implementing electromechanical integration schemes, and developing and operating control systems.
  • Experience applying engineering principles to design, monitor, and evaluate conditions and operational performance of electro-mechanical systems.
  • The ability to solve complex problems and elaborate technical concepts to audience with general science and engineering education background.
Qualifications Minimum Requirements:
  • A Ph.D. degree of Mechanical, Electrical, Materials, Civil Engineering, or equivalent disciplines, completed by commencement of appointment within the previous 5 years.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with basic Linux operating system operations.
  • Proficiency with interpreted, interactive programing languages such as Python and MATLAB.
  • R&D experience of robotic arms or robotic vehicles on the design, fabrication, assembly, diagnosis, integration, and operation.
  • Work in an R&D team environment with dynamically changing assignments and requirements from research programs and external customers.
  • Collaboration with peer researchers across different fields/disciplines and across different research institutes and industries.
  • Strong verbal communication and technical presentation skills.
  • Proactivity to develop new or needed technical skills for professional development.
Desired Requirements:
  • Proficiency with compiled programing languages such as C and C++.
  • Proficiency with Linux shell, and shell scripting.
  • Proficiency with ROS 2 (Robotic Operating System) or equivalent frameworks.
  • Proficiency of SolidWorks for complex system design.
  • R&D and/or applied engineering experience of computer vision in robotics, sensors in robotics, and digital twins in robotics.
  • Record of published peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Experience to develop novel research concepts and work with team members to develop research proposals for new research opportunities.
  • Proficiency in preparing and delivering technical presentations to all types of audience, including the external customers, professional communities, government agencies, and public

Job Information:

  • Salary: $96,900 Annually
