What You Will Do:

We have an opportunity for an experienced and dynamic Chief Geotechnical Engineer to help support our rapidly expanding workload and impressive portfolio of prestigious seismic hazard and geotechnical earthquake engineering projects on a regional and national level.

We need to increase our team to meet the growing demands from our clients, especially in the infrastructure sector (particularly rail, highways, water, and maritime/shoreline development) and the energy sector, which includes carbon capture & storage, renewable energy (wind, and hydropower), low carbon engineering and nuclear power.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take a leading role on some of our most challenging projects in seismically active regions. We are looking for someone with the drive and enthusiasm to embrace the future in these exciting and rapidly evolving sectors.

The successful applicant for this Chief Geotechnical Engineer position is an engineer with a proven highly technical and project management track record.

An overview of typical responsibilities includes:

  • Leading the seismic team on geotechnical design for major water infrastructure, rail, highway, maritime, tunnelling, and building projects.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and/or senior reviewer by providing seismic/geotechnical engineering expertise and technical oversight related to projects with varying size and complexity.
  • Provide analysis/design guidance and review of design calculations, engineering analyses, and technical reports.
  • Mentor junior staff.
  • Assist in development of technical and quality initiatives.
  • Support the development of engineering proposals and qualification statements
  • Leading the seismic team for strategic bids.
  • Collaborate with peers in offices across the U.S. and across various technical disciplines to achieve project goals. Other disciplines may include geotechnical, civil, structural, hydraulic, mechanical, geology, environmental sciences, and construction.
  • Developing your own network of business contacts to contribute to the growth of the seismic hazard and geotechnical earthquake engineering practice.
  • Representing Gannett Fleming at industry events.
  • Integrating the team in various technical disciplines and market leads.
  • Mentoring of early career team members.
  • Managing, motivating, and developing professional staff.
  • Developing and then overseeing initiatives.
Education | Experience:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering with at least 20 years of professional experience.
  • Extensive experience in one or more of the following sectors: highways, rail, energy or water geotechnics.
  • Professional Engineer
  • Proven experience of acting as a Chief Geotechnical Engineer / Technical Director in a fast-moving AEC consulting environment.
  • Project management - experience and understanding of the needs and approaches to the engineering consultancy and design markets, including relationships with clients, work planning and commercial management.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience related to shallow and deep foundations, ground improvement, slope and embankment stability, retaining wall design, soil mechanics, material testing, settlement and deformation analyses, seismic and liquefaction assessments, pavement designs, and other geotechnical design and construction.
  • Experience/proficiency with common computer-aided analysis and modeling programs applicable to these technical areas.
  • Proven seismic/geotechnical analysis experience (seismic hazard analyses, site response analysis, and performance-based methods).
  • Excellent interpersonal and technical skills and the ability to develop and lead seismic analyses and geotechnical design teams.
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence to liaise with clients.
  • Good track record in negotiating and running successful jobs.
  • Excellent report writing skills with the ability to self-check and produce accurate work.
